Wedding Severance
This courtship ritual requires that
each man who claims he’s worth consideration
present her with a token of intent -
a finger, cut through personal donation.
She chooses from the contributions and
adorns herself with her selections, strings
the victor’s digit on a strand around
her neck, and calls him for a christening.
She decorates the victor-suitor with
a garland made from all remaining gems,
anointing the beloved with a wreath
around his chest, counting each cut stem
as measures of his higher qualities,
    and of his wife’s desirability.
